IPG: Instructional Planning Grid [Sample Lesson]
TEKS:Eighth Grade. English Language Arts and Reading. 4, 8, 15b.
Objective:TLW write a poem using poetic techniques.

Big Understanding:TLW explore imagery association in relationship to writing poetry.

Assessment Evidence:
- Group work: 10 lines of imagery on an assigned season.
- Homework: 10 lines of imagery describing favorite season.
Opening Hook:
- Ask students to open their journal.
- Check to see if students are okay with the lights being turned off. Remind students to write down responses and not to verbalize them.
- Turn off lights and prompt students. Prompt: What are you feeling? What images are coming to your mind?
- Turn lights back on and re-prompt students. Prompt: Now what are you feeling? Do you feel better now that the lights are on? What kind of images are coming to your mind now?
- Play Skyfire Ace by Sabrepulse. Prompt: What are you feeling? What images are coming to your mind? What do you feel like doing?
- Play Aquatic Ambience from DKC. . Prompt: What are you feeling? What images are coming to your mind?
- Have students close their eyes and assist them with swapping pens with a partner. Prompt: How does it feel? What images are coming to your mind? Does it make you want to write? Is it rough? Is it smooth? Is it cold?
- Discuss responses as a group.
- Guide students to definition of imagery.
Instructional Strategies / Student Activities:
- Input: Project Harlem(A Dream Deferred) and as a class locate and explain imagery.
- Modeling: Do the first couple examples.
- Guided Practice/Monitoring: Break students into groups with each group being assigned a season. Each group is responsible for writing 10 lines of imagery describing their assigned season.
- Check for Understanding: Teacher will work the room observing each group and use vocal prompts to check understanding. After group work there will be a class discussion on imagery as well.
Materials / Resources
- Students' journals
- Langston Hughes - Harlem(A Dream Deferred) poem
- Projector
- Computer with speakers
- Paper for students to work on.
Grouping Patterns:
Heterogeneous grouping by which season each student's birthday is:
- Winter - December 21 - March 19
- Spring - March 20 - June 20
- Summer - June 21 - September 21
- Fall - September 22 - December 20
